Study Permit

Canada is a safe and diverse country for international students. Canada is home to some of the world’s top universities and provides the best international programs and research facilities. It’s academic standards are internationally recognised. Moreover, Canadian degrees are recognised worldwide and are your gateway to a prosperous career. A Canadian study visa allows a person to travel and study in Canada. In addition, a study visa lets you work part-time to bear your expense and qualify for student facilities. A student is permitted to work for twenty hours a week without a work permit while studying in Canada.
Upon completing graduation from an eligible Canadian Designated Learning Institution (DLI), a student is eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit. International students with qualifications, language skills, and valid job offers can apply for permanent residence. A Post-Graduation Work Permit also allows a person to work in Canada and gain valuable work experience.

Eligibility
To become eligible to apply for a study visa, you must:

9

Be registered at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)

9

Establish that you have enough funds to pay for your tuition fees, living expenses and return transportation.

9

Be law-abiding, without any criminal record, and have a police certificate (if necessary)

9

Be in good health

9

Persuade the immigration officer that you will leave Canada when your study permit ends

Visitor Visa

Canadian Temporary Resident Visa or Visitor Visa is an official document that is issued by Canada’s visa office and is attached to a person’s passport. It proves that you meet the requirements to enter Canada as a temporary resident. Canada allows individuals to come for tourism, business purposes, or visit family and friends. In order to enter Canada, a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) is required, which may be for single entry or multiple entries.
Canada issues two types of Visitor Visas:
1. Single entry visas: These are issued for a period of up to 6 months
2. Multiple-entry visa: These visas are granted for up to 10 years or until the expiration on the passport (whichever date comes first).
Eligibility Requirements for Canadian Visitor Visa
The visa requirements for a Canadian tourist visa are as follows:
9

Valid passport

9

No criminal history or immigration-related convictions

9

Assure the immigration officer that you will return to your home country (stating you have ties such as a home, financial assets, job, or family)

9

Proof you have funds to sustain yourself during your stay

9

Proof of good health

9

The intended duration of your stay and temporary residence

Another alternative for individuals is to obtain a Super Visa. A Super Visa is issued explicitly to parents and grandparents of permanent residents and Canadian citizens. The Super Visa allows a person to live in Canada for two years without renewing their status.

Family Class Application

Family Sponsorship Class allows spouses, grandparents, and common-laws to reunite in Canada. In order to sponsor the family, the individual living in Canada must be a permanent resident of Canada or a Canadian citizen.
An individual can sponsor family members or relatives if they are:
9

Parents and grandparents

9

Spouses, conjugal partners or common-laws

9

Dependent children, including adopted children.

For sponsoring a relative who wishes to immigrate to Canada, a person must be:
9

Holding Canadian citizenship or permanent residency in Canada

9

18 years or older

9

Must not be facing criminal charges or awaiting a result of an immigration inquiry (in case of a permanent resident)

9

Has not defaulted on the previous sponsorship agreement.

9

Meets the financial criteria (except when sponsoring a spouse) set by immigration authorities.

Express Entry

The Canada Express Entry visa enables skilled foreign workers an express entry into Canada. The Canadian government introduced the Express Entry Program in January 2015. It allows skilled workers willing to migrate to Canada to apply under the Federal skilled worker program even without a job offer. In addition, it is a points-based Canadian immigration regulatory system with which the Canadian government manages skilled workers’ applications who are willing to immigrate to Canada as permanent residents.
Express entry covers three significant immigration programs, which are as follows:
9

Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)

9

Federal Skilled Trade Program (FSTP)

9

Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

The eligibility criteria an individual must meet for the Express Entry program is as follows:
9

A test proving fair knowledge of English or French

9

Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) positive report from an authorised assessing body of Canada.

9

A score of at least 67 points from a 100-point system based on Six Selection Factors, including age, education, language ability, spouse language ability, blood relative, work experience, and adaptability.

9

Achieve a minimum score of CLB level 7 in a valid Language test.

9

Good medical health and police clearance

9

Proof of sufficient funds

Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)

It is an alternative to the Canadian Federal Skilled Worker Visa program. As per an agreement with the Government of Canada, most provinces in Canada can nominate immigrants willing to settle in their province. Those willing to immigrate to Canada under Provincial Nominee Program must first apply to the province where they wish to settle and complete its provincial nomination process.
Provinces Part of Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)

Below mentioned is a list of the provinces and territories of Canada that participate in this program. However, since the Provincial Nominee Program varies from province to province, one is advised to visit their websites for more information.

A suitable Provincial nomination increases your chances of getting an Invitation to Apply. On receipt of Invitation to Apply, an individual can apply for a Permanent Resident visa.

Labour market impact assessment ( LMIA)

Employers willing to hire a temporary foreign worker need to submit a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). Under the Temporary Foreign Workers Program, employers can hire workers temporarily to overcome temporary labour and skill shortages.

LMIA program’s purpose is to justify hiring foreign workers by showing that there is no qualified Canadian worker for performing the job. Therefore, a foreign worker is needed to fill the job. The LMIA applicants must display their efforts in hiring Canadians and permanent residents before they can offer a job to a temporary worker.

The employers must get LMIA before hiring a foreign worker, and the LMIA document acts as a government approval for the individual they choose to hire. On obtaining a positive LMIA, the employers can forward it to the foreign worker they want to hire so that the person can submit it with their work permit application.

Before applying to become a foreign worker, a person:
9

Needs to prove to an officer that they will leave Canada on the expiry of their work permit.

9

Must show that they have sufficient money to support themselves in Canada.

9

Has no record of criminal activity and are not a danger to Canada's security.

A temporary foreign worker has an opportunity to apply for permanent residency if they wish to do so.

Work Permit

Foreign nationals require a work permit to work in Canada. A work permit is a legal document that permits a foreign national to work inside Canada.

Open work permit

Any foreigner wishing to work in Canada requires proper authorization in the form of a valid work permit. The open work permit is not tied to a single employer or location. The foreign national having a work permit can work for any employer in any location throughout Canada. Labour Market Impact Assessment is not required for open work permits.

Open work permits are issued under the following immigration programs:
9

Post-Graduation Work Permits (PGWP)

9

International Experience Canada (IEC)

9

Inland Spousal or Common-Law Sponsorship

9

Bridging Open Work Permits (BOWP)
